Introduction to Portfolios

Portfolio brings your investments into Simply Wall St so you can track and analyze them in one place.

Choosing the right method depends on how much control you want over your portfolio and how detailed you'd like your returns analysis to be. By choosing the method that best suits your investing needs, you’ll be able to create a portfolio that gives you the perfect balance of control, automation, and insight.

2 Types of Portfolios:

  1. Linked Portfolio
  2. Manual Portfolio

Choosing the right way to create your portfolio depends on your goals. Here’s a quick guide to help you decide.

Compare your options:

Linked Portfolio Manual Portfolio
Your Goal Easiest, most automated experience. Most accurate and detailed performance analysis.
Return Analysis Basic: Total return based on average cost price. Detailed: Gains, dividends, FX impact, and IRR.
Time & Effort Fast: Setup takes less than 2 minutes. More effort: Requires your transaction history.
What You Need Your broker login details. A trade history file with ticker, transaction type, date, price, and shares.
Key Benefit Daily, automated snapshot of your holdings. Full performance tracking from day one.
Keep Updated Automatic: Syncs with your broker daily. Manual: Add transactions individually or in bulk.

Linked Portfolio

Best for: users who want their portfolio to stay current without manual effort.

Connect a supported brokerage account and Simply Wall St imports your current holdings, then syncs automatically at least once daily.

Limitation: Linked portfolios don't currently import transaction history, so returns are based on your current holdings and cost data rather than a full transaction-based calculation.

What you'll need: A supported broker and your broker login.

Manual Portfolio

Best for: users who want a detailed, transaction-based breakdown of their performance, including realized and unrealized gains.

Provide your transaction history by importing a file or entering transactions manually. Simply Wall St uses this to calculate detailed returns, including dividends, currency impact, and annualized return (IRR) where supported.

What you'll need: your transaction history from your broker.
